Applicants must have prior veterinary clinic surgical experience and a respectful and professional demeanor. 

As a Surgery Veterinary Technician, you will: 

  • Assist in patient procedures using knowledge of anesthesia and analgesia-related protocols and procedures, including formulating anesthetic plans tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Monitor anesthesia, troubleshoot anesthetic complications, and make appropriate interventions. 
  • Intravenous catheter placement, endotracheal intubation, and anesthetic equipment use and maintenance. 
  • Perform physical exam; accurately counts heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate, and effort. 
  • Understand normal vital parameters and alert doctor when abnormal. 
  • Set up intravenous fluids and CRI's. 
  • Continuous expansion of knowledge and skillset: advanced anesthetic skills including epidurals, difficult airway intubation, and critical case management. 
  • Operate all brands of intravenous fluid pumps and can troubleshoot errors. 
  • Comfortable with medical math. 
  • Ability to take patient through entire procedure from start to finish (pre-op, monitoring, post-op, and recovery) 
  • Manage appointments, obtain histories, medical record keeping, invoicing, patient discharges, etc. 
  • Disconnect and connect patients from intravenous fluids aseptically. Monitor patient response to fluid therapy including signs of overload. 
  • If you are not a RVT, you must have a strong foundational understanding and be able to perform the responsibilities of a surgery veterinary technician including (but not limited to): 
    • Venipuncture 
    • Placing IV Catheters 
    • Prepping patients for surgery 
    • Calculating drugs, CRI's, & fluid rates 
    • Inducing, monitoring, and recovering anesthesia patients 
    • Scrubbing in for soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries 
    • Cleaning/wrapping/sterilizing surgical instruments 
    • Administration of Medications (IV or other methods)
